Quote :
The president can also argue that the tide really has turned. Bin Laden's death is what allows him to make the case but intelligence agencies do seem to think al-Qaeda is a busted flush and Afghanistan is certainly not a safe haven anymore.

Some argue a terrible attack may well happen in the future. But its would-be perpetrators are more likely to be based in Yemen or the UK than Afghanistan.

But the flood that washes away all other arguments is the state of the economy.

With the other main news of the day a worrying report from the Federal Reserve, a key part of Obama's short speech was when he said: "Over the last decade, we have spent a trillion dollars on war, at a time of rising debt and hard economic times. Now, we must invest in America's greatest resource - our people.

"America, it is time to focus on nation building here at home."

With an election around the corner, voters concerns and fears weigh more heavily than wishes of the generals to pursue elusive victory.

We cannot police the rest of the world forever. We got Bin Laden and a huge number of his followers before finally hunting him down. That was the point originally...some of us actually remember. There will continue to be terrorists if we leave or if we stay, but we're done with what we went in there to do.

Thank you to Obama and whoever else is involved in this decision. It's about dang time, IMO.

While I agree we need to get out, I would prefer he let General Petraeus set the time table. This coincides all too conveniently with the November elections. Same with the release of 30 millions barrels of oil form the petroleum reserves.

It's politics again.

Completely agree...

we need someone to tell us when we cna bring the troops out, instead of giving them the deadline and just hoping it'll be ok.

if we use a political deadline instead of a military one, we could end up with a nasty situation for the country we leave behind.

it's never a good idea to leave an armed enemy still breathing behind you.
especially when it's to help win an election.

I don't doubt that. It was also politics that got us scattered here there and yonder. If we'd have stayed on task (Bin Laden & Al Qaeda), we'd have been out a long time ago. Like it or not, Obama is the Commander in Chief. It's his responsibility to set the date for removal of troops. We cannot stay there forever. We can't afford to stay there today.

No argument here, Joy. I just wish he would stick to his promise of letting the 'conditions on the ground' make the decision. Petraeus came out this morning and said it was not what he recommended.
