PostSubject: Thanksgiving - For what are you thankful?   Mon Nov 21, 2011 8:51 am

In 1621, the Plymouth colonists and Wampanoag Indians shared an autumn harvest feast that is acknowledged today as one of the first Thanksgiving celebrations in the colonies. For more than two centuries, days of thanksgiving were celebrated by individual colonies and states. It wasn't until 1863, in the midst of the Civil War, that President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a national Thanksgiving Day to be held each November.

For more on Thanksgiving from HISTORY.COM, click here.

For what are you thankful? :turkey:

I was just adding this to the calendar, but feel free to share whenever you feel like it. Smile

I am thankful that I am able to prepare my meal and share it with others instead of having to rely on someone
else to provide it to me.

Whoa...where to start?

I'm thankful I'm not a Somalian.
I'm thankful I'm not a woman.
I'm thankful I always knew someone that would come bail me out.
I'm thankful that the one I thought I "loved" when I was 19, WASN'T the one. Else I would be married to/divorced from a b*tch, and not have the beautiful family I have now!
I'm REALLY thankful that the time DHR hauled my a$$ to court because an 18 year old boy, of a girl I once knew, wanted to know who his Dad was...and it wasn't ME!!!!
I'm thankful I know you guys...kinda'.
I'm thankful for a lot more stuff, but I think my sausage is done, and I must go eat!

I had to think about this because there is soo much I am thankful for and it's in no particular order. bounce

I am thankful for every breath I have taken, and I am thankful that no matter what happened I didn't quite give up.
I'm thankful for my amazing husband who is strong enough to stand up to me and gentle enough to show me his marshmallow heart I love you
I'm thankful for all the things I have experienced in my life...painful and joyful...since they are the sum of who I am now.
I'm thankful for my children. They are all amazing and gifted creatures who have enriched my life and teach me something every day.
I'm thankful that I've done many things in this life since I can share them with others now.
I'm thankful that I can be myself now and not hide who I am inside.
I'm thankful that I have the options to do what I love now as well as the opportunity to make enough of a living to pay for the basics.
I'm thankful for friends and all the people I meet along my path.
I'm thankful for basically everything...I could do this for years and I plan to do it every day. puf

Addendum to my thankful list!
I just got a call from the Primo grill company that I have won a grill that I apparently recently registered
for, so now in addition to being thankful that I can prepare my meal, I now have an improved method to do so.
I will be deep frying turkeys this Thursday, still have openings if anyone would like me to deep fry theirs, let me know
in time get yourself a turkey no bigger than 12-14 pounds and come to the marinating party the night before.
If it is too much to come the night before we can make arrangement's to do it all Thursday morning.
Please let me know if you are interested, there will be no charge for this service.

I will be smoking something on my new grill for Christmas though.

Well, I saw this on MSNBC and just had to share it...gus, enjoy your turkey cooking and stay safe. I realize most who get hurt aren't following directions, but thought I would post it anyway just because I care about you.

There will always be the idiots who put a frozen one into a bucket of hot oil in the kitchen! KAAABOOM!

We are just doing a little turkey and a side of pork loin. That way, everybody gets something.

I will be missing Thanksgiving at my Mom's this year, which I am bummed about, but we will hopefully have many more together. The husband wants to go see his Grandma this year. There won't be cornbread dressing, but her stuffing is so good that it almost makes up for it. Smile

I am thankful I have a bed, a roof over my head and warm home because I am exhausted. People in third world countries cannot imagine such luxury. I am so thankful to have been born here.

I'm thankful for humor! I love to laugh Laughing
A friend posted this in another forum and it's too funny to not share;

Dear Family & Friends,

I know that you were eager to accept our family's invitation to

Thanksgiving dinner when you found out that the famous Martha

Stewart would be joining us. However, due to scheduling conflicts

beyond her control, Ms. Stewart finds that she is unable to grace

our table this year. With that in mind, there will be a few minor

changes regarding the meal and decor, as outlined below. Please

be aware of them, and adjust your appetite and dress appropriately.

Thank you.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
1) Our driveway will not be lined with homemade, paper bag luminaries. After
several trial runs and two visits from the fire department, it was decided
that, no matter how cleverly done, rows of flaming lunch sacks do not have
the desired welcoming effect.
2) Once inside, please note that the entry space will not be decorated with
swags of Indian corn and fall foliage. Instead, we included our dog in
decorating by having him track in colorful autumn leaves from the back yard.
The mud was his idea.
3) The dining table will not be covered with expensive linens, fancy china,
or crystal goblets. If possible, we will use dishes that match and everyone
will get a fork. Since this is Thanksgiving, we will refrain from using the
paper SpongeBob dinner plates, the leftover Halloween napkins, and our
plastic cup collection.
4) Our centerpiece will not be a tower of fresh fruit and flowers. Instead
we will be proudly displaying a hedgehog-like decoration hand-crafted from
the finest construction paper and pine cones. The artist assures me it is a
turkey, albeit one without wings, legs, or a beak.
5) We will be dining somewhat later than planned. However, our daughter will
entertain you while you wait. I'm sure she will be happy to share every
choice comment her mother made regarding Thanksgiving, pilgrims, stuffing
choices, the turkey hotline, and, especially, her husband. Please remember
that most of these comments were made at 7:00AM upon discovering that said
husband had only remembered to pull the turkey from the freezer at 6:00 AM,
and that the thing was still hard enough to cut diamonds.
6) As an accompaniment to our daughter's recital of these events, I will
play a recording of Native American tribal drumming. Curiously, the tribal
drumming sounds a great deal like a frozen turkey in a clothes dryer, but
that only enhances the holiday appropriateness. If our daughter should
mention that we don't own a recording of Native American tribal drumming,
ignore her. She's only nine. What does she know?
7) A dainty silver bell will not be rung to announce the start of our
feast.. We have chosen to keep our traditional method of assembling when
the smoke alarm goes off.
There will be no formal seating arrangement. When the smoke alarm sounds,
please gather around the table and sit where you like. In the spirit of
harmony, we will ask all the children to sit at a separate table. In a
separate room. Next door. And I would like to take this opportunity to
remind our younger diners that "passing the rolls" is neither a football
play nor an excuse to bean your cousin in the head with bread.
9) The turkey will not be carved at the table. I know you have seen the
Norman Rockwell image of one person carving a turkey in front of a crowd of
appreciative onlookers. Such a scene may occur somewhere in America, but it
won't be happening at our dinner table. For safety reasons, the turkey will
be carved in the kitchen at a private ceremony. I stress "private", meaning
do not, under any circumstances, enter the kitchen to laugh at me. Do not
send small, unsuspecting children, or older, helpful grandparents into the
kitchen to check on my progress. I have a very large, very sharp knife. The
turkey is unarmed. It stands to reason that I will eventually win the
battle. When I do, we will eat.
10) For the duration of the meal, we will refer to the gravy by its
lesser-known name: Kraft Cheese Sauce. If a young diner questions you
regarding the origins or makeup of the Kraft Cheese Sauce, smile kindly and
say that you know the answer, but it's a secret that can't be revealed to
them until they are 18.
11) Instead of offering a choice among 12 different scrumptious desserts, we
will be serving the traditional pumpkin pie, garnished with whipped cream
and dog tongue marks. You still have a choice: take it or leave it.
That concludes our list of alterations. Again, I apologize that Martha will
not be joining us this year. Come to think of it, she probably won't come
next year either.
HAPPY THANKSGIVING!
Good Turkey Day to everyone!!! Hope yours starts better than mine.
Mrs Cage cannot find her large, 14 inch, cast iron skillet...with which she makes the cornbread for dressing.
Although it has not been spoken, I am sure she thinks I had something to do with it's disappearance.
The short quips...cabinets being shut louder than usual...and the looks she gives me when she thinks I'm not looking . I know the "signs".
Although I have had nothing to do with it being "gone", and am playing oblivious to the fact she can't find it, I am ready.
She knows she has no evidence, but will eventually ask me If I had it, I'll tell her at that point...that I used it to catch the oil in when I changed it in the van!
That should do for a laugh!
Life is good.
Hope ya'll have a great day with Family and Friends!
